Unhappy Engine dying when ac compressor switch on

i own a 1988 mazda 323 hatchback with a b3 SOHC engine.

The car runs great without the ac.. but after switching it on, and the engine warms up a bit, it'll just die on idle.. i've checked the ac idle vacuum valve and replaced it, still the same problem.. and after a few times of stalling, it won't hold idle without the ac on either!! unless i rev it up some..

i've changed the spark plug leads, plugs, cleaned out the carb, even changed the fuel filter and cleaned out the petrol tank (went through some extensive engine work at the garage to get the car up and running again)

any ideas would be great.. i'm not sure about the idle air control valve tho, does the B3 engine have one? and if so where is it and how is it connected?
