Default Can't select 2nd, 4th and reverse gear.

Hi all,

Apologies if this is in the wrong please, I really am desperate for some help.

I have a Mazda premacy, 1999 on 152'000 miles.

It has had some issues with being still to select gears and a whine coming from 5th gear at any speed.

Today, whilst driving, I selected reverse, felt nothing wrong, drove 10 miles down the road, tried selecting 2nd, nothing at all, it feels like there is no selection chamber for 2nd, 4th or reverse gear, it's just solid.

I've had my mechanic change e gearbox oil but this hasn't worked, I'm almost sure it's the gearbox itself but was hoping for some input and clarification from members.

Please help me, I have not got much money and if there could be something else other than the box I'd really appreciate knowing about it.

Thanks in advance
Wayne

It really sounds like the synchro rings are shot. The only other possibility I see is that the bushings in the shift linkage are worn and causing the trouble.

Thanks so much for the reply.

I'm a bit stupid with cars, would replacing the gearbox solve the issues you mention above?

Thanks again, really appreciate it.

Most likely replacing the gear box will fix it. I would get one from the junk yard.

But before you do that let a mechanic evaluate the shift linkage and it's bushings.

Look at this thread on another forum to better understand what's going on. Print out post #5 to show your mechanic.

Thanks for your help.

I did manage to source a new box for £125, fitting was £110, i got a call halfway through to say the linkage had snapped so it ended up costing me a further £110.

Still not a bad price and now runs like a dream
