Default -84 626 wont start.

Hi everyone!
I have a -84 626 that wont start. Me and my dad have tried anything that we could come up with.
First we removed the starter and bought a new won, the old one smelled like it has been burnt or something.
The new one spinns like a cat when we connect it directly to a battery but in the car it to weak to turn the engine.
We have checked the engine and there seems like there is no problem with that but when we tried the + cabel to
the battery in the car its an earth (its this the right word? My english is pretty bad) wich my father sais it shouldn´t be.
So both my father and my both brothers thinks there is a shortcut somewhere.
Now we have tried to unplugg cabels and try again, checked all the fuses but with no result.
Any idea about what it could be?

Sounds like either the engine is seizing up ( which you say you checked ) Can you turn engine over with a wrench with little difficulty? Or there is a poor electrical connection between the battery and starter. Double check the cable that runs from '+' positive battery post to the the starter. Also check the Ground cable from the battery to where it is bolted to the block. A loose or corroded connection at any of these points will give you a very weak cranking speed. Does the starter crank engine over at all?
