Did you do a compression check on all cylinders? When it overheated, you may have warped the heads.

Can these cars bend valves, say for instance if the cambelt snap?

Not sure if it's an interference engine or not.

If you did a compression check and it showed even compression between all cylinders, I'd say the valves aren't bent.

Double check to make sure the valves aren't 180 degrees out of time.

I've built engines...and entire vehicles - it's not hard to miss that. I've had vehicles I had checked numerous times for timing and not fire turn out to be 180 degrees out. During the 4-stroke cycle their are 2 TDC positions for the piston.

I have done that as well, the crank's timing mark and the camshafts mark's are dead on.There's an i and an e on top of the cams they are facing topwards the marks on the cams pulleys are facing each other when its at tdc.Its a 16valve 1.6 b6 motor.According to the workshopmanaul the inlet and outlet notches should face outwards on the tdc for the fire cycle on the no 1 piston. What boders me is that when the the motor is in this cycle the pick up on the crankpulley, there are 4 of them one for each piston to detect fire timing,is about 1/4 way away from the sencor. The pulley can only go on 1 way.All the wires can go on one way. What i have found is that there's a earthstrap on the engine mounting hanging loose,i haven't yet had time to see if this could be the problem but i will try again over the weekend. What do you think?

Could be....all depends on what that's trying to ground. If you've already verified you have spark @ the engine, I can't think of anything that wouldn't already be grounded that needed to be.
