Our Mazda Workshop Manual shows the correct valve spring orientation for the outer valve springs........on a Mazda anyway!

I was joking because of the machinist screw up...

Got it together, lash set. Far as I can go until it is in the car. So that's the plan for tomorrow... supposed to be pretty weather. Fingers crossed.

I also have a complete coolant hose kit to install, a thermostat. Need to bleed off fuel until it runs fresh. Pull the battery from the truck. 😆 And set up for ignition timing checks. Plenty of other time consuming things. Like drain and re-fill the transmission, replace and bleed the slave cylinder... etc.

Hopefully we get to the new struts and mounting up the wheels, soon. I'm ready to roll...

I do not, it is hanging over the car on the hoist. One of the nephews came by with a stripped wheel bolt. Not a stud and nut, a VW golf GTI. Stripped, with an easy out 3/8 drive socket stuck on it. AND a 3/8 anvil broke off in the easy out socket.
I managed to get the broken anvil out and used a 3/4 drive rachet adapted to 1/2 drive then adapted to 3/8 drive, again. Took all the rest of the lug bolts loose and applied antiseize, reinstalled. Then heated everything with the brakes and a short trip in a turbo car.
Came back and overtighted the lugs next to the stripped one and loosened the lug opposite of the stripped one. Bingo, it turned right out. BTW, the lug bolt set was installed by the dealer!

They seem to run one lug down tight then tighten the other four. Makes for one overstressed lug. We applied antisieze to all the other lug bolts. It stalled his Godspeed lowering spring install. Poor guy... 😁

It will be in tonight, but not running.

Update: Engine is set in, bellhousing bolts and engine mounts are in. That's it.

Well, that's still progress! Keep us posted on how it is going.

I just finished lapping and installed the valves in a B2000 head for a friends truck.......gotta clean up the rocker assembly and get it on the head, then install it today.

Good luck with it! I am sure it will do great. Glad another one is earning it's insurance payment.

Car is running. Not great, but running. I am diagnosing the fun Honda idle surging issues, today. Chalk it up to sitting for 5 years.
Engine sounds great, and we did drive it for about a 30 min ride, late last night. I can't get a stable enough idle to set the timing yet. Process of elimination is happening now. I think my salvage yard throttle body has had the throttle shaft stop screw tampered with...

It seems to be drawing too much air through with all lines plugged and the intake air control valve blocked and unplugged. It does the classic rev up and fuel cut, rev up and fuel cut, idle surge. If the TPS shows closed and desired idle is too high, it cuts injector pulse. So, I have to find the "extra" air leak. I think the throttle stop has been moved open too far.

If not, I have a bad intake manifold. Which hasn't happened to me with honda castings yet. It has also been painted, before in the past. So I doubt it is leaking through the casting somewhere. Anything is possible at this point.

Otherwise, it runs great after it's rolling. Did about 3 pulls to 5k last night, during the drive. Don't want to push it too far yet, but it stayed together and sounds great.

Great! I haven't really messed with a Civic or Accord that had idling issues before. Both of my sons had Hondas as their first cars......oldest had a 1994 Accord, and I bought a 1995 Civic for my younger son.....back in the day. They are 38 y.o. and 34 y.o. now, so it's been a while!

So......after some reading on the net.......apparently some of the Hondas have a Thermowax Pellet in the Fast Idle Valve (FITV) and if it goes bad, you will get a surging idle when the engine is warmed up.

Ever heard of this MM? I sure haven't.....but I haven't had to mess with one that was surging either.

Yes, that valve causes a lot of people, a lot of trouble.
It has been deleted on this car. You can find other models with throttle bodies without the FITV valve. I did this.

It does in fact have a wax seat and thermo expansion spring. It is a purely mechanical, cold start/fast idle assistant. It is also adjustable. But a cap must be removed to see the slot for adjustment. Many people over look it.

Also, I am impressed at how fast you came up with that information.
AND my problem was similar... too much air.

Turns out someone tampered with the throttle stop screw. The throttle body was a salvage yard purchase.

I can go on at length about 88-2000 Honda idle issues and related components. But I will spare you... 😆

Turns out... I had a compounded 4 issue problem.

1. The biggest problem is I have an adjustable camshaft gear, and the head is milled about 55 thousandths. This makes the cam timing seem a half a tooth off. Forcing me to set it up and correct it with the gear adjustment. I chose to set it retarded visually. Because of this ignition timing is out the windows.
2. I now know a leaking IACV valve is present. It is a dwell plunger. Just like any other ecu controlled intake air valve. *When ecu desired idle is higher than commanded the ecu cuts injector pulse.* That makes the annoying throttle pulse idle sound that is classic honda. Burrr naa burrr naa burrr naa....
3. The TPS... has a bad spot 1-99%. Like this: 1%= throttle closed, 2%= throttle open, 3%=throttle open, 4%-9%= throttle closed, 10%-99%= throttle open.
That dead spot immediately throws it into the fuel cut mode from above.
4. Someone sometime had moved the factory setup throttle shaft stop screw. Creating an always higher than desired conditon for the ECU, and throttle cut scenario again.

New IACV and TPS due for tomorrow. Afterwards it should be good and I can move back to the B2000. 😁

May my parts be in pieces and my hands be the greasiest.

Little Red rides in-tint is running great and driving, today. Just a few loose ends like: Making a catch can, tucking the ecu back inside, and a good cleaning all over. I also have a strut set and some engine mounts, but that will come in time. No rush.

Back on the road... but it took 2 weeks. 😆
