Default OEM 2.5 2018 CX5 Mazda Filter Carbon

Did an oil change on a 2.5 with 73,000 miles belonging to a friend. Decided to open up the filter and check it out . Filter had 3000 miles not sure of the oil since his last change was at the dealer. We replaced it with M1 High Mileage 0W20 and Synthetic Media Fram. Plan now is to open up the Fram next change and check it out. The carbon was captured by the filter with the can being clean. Guess the filter worked.

Just an FYI these kind of oil filter dissections are not really conclusive?
I always do like seeing them but most of the time unlike yours it's about armature trying to claim that an oil filter is better than another or what the composition of the material is also in attempting to discredit a targeted oil filter brand and model of their oil filter.

Nice to see that was not your intent.

The better time spent would be sending an oil sample off to a place that can analyze your oil.
It what you can't see that is often more important than what you can see regarding oil.

I agree they should send off the oil and now that I have an idea what oil was used we can pull it apart and see what's inside. Personal observation after 55 years in the business 99% of the filters sold are of decent quality provided you stick to a reasonable mileage interval.

you are an "old Timer".. I only have 48 years. Oil filter service experience... LOL

My go to Filter use to be FRAM in the beginning of life getting my figures and hands stained with the working on engines and transmission and rear ends. Washing never got them totally clean. I think my first oil filter was a Shell branded oil filters when I was a part time gas pump jockey and windshield cleaning expert! lol Ding, Ding, can I help you?
You remember the day when some pimple faced kid would run out pump your gas, clean your windshield and check your tires. That may have been me..... ROLMAO. Although what many didn't know is the so-called alcoholic mechanic use to have me do the tune-ups another service like brakes and even the really easy oil and filter services. But only paid minimum wage at the time and no one know I did the service work. It was so bad that I never included on any resume back then. The owner never knew . The Shell (Warren Stowe Shell) station is now a 7 eleven . Times change.

Oh I forgot to mention. If you have a strong magnet take and run, it over the oil filter pleats see if you catch anything

Time to get out the magnet. Ding, ding, ding clean your windshield sir like your oil checked? That's how I started. Never realised that dumping the brake drum dust on the floor would probably kill me. Ford's were better in water with the distributor up front and the 327 couldn't swim with it out back. Never venture further than 5 miles in your Dodge without a resistor in the glove box. Folks today have it made nothing to worry about other than their digital dash. Never had a FRAM give me issues or WIX have sold Baldwin, Hastings, Luberfiner and Kralinator never a problem. Had a station in town who had a guy install Purolators with no oil on the gasket so when one of those showed up you got a extra half hour labour and oil up your arm. Yep the memory is still sharp. Enjoy reading your post and a Merry Christmas by the way.
