Default New Member – Turbo Miata Project & Learning as I Go

Hey everyone,

New member here – name’s Vex. I recently took over a turbo 1.6 Miata project that my older brother left unfinished, and now I’m diving in headfirst to get it running right. I’ve got some basic mechanical experience (oil changes, brakes, etc.), but this is my first time working with forced induction and tuning.

The Car:

• 199X Miata with 1.6L engine

• eBay-style turbo kit (T25)

• Front-mount intercooler

• Megasquirt PNP ECU

• 255lph fuel pump, stock injectors (for now)

• Wideband installed

• Running a basic street tune right now

Current Issues:

• Idle’s a bit unstable, AFRs bounce around

• Learning how to tune properly with TunerStudio

• Turbo seems to spool okay, but hitting boost cut under heavy throttle (may be set too low)

Goals:

• Get it running reliably with a safe street tune

• Upgrade injectors and go for ~200whp

• Eventually clean up the wiring and maybe tuck the bay

Hoping to learn from the community here and maybe help others down the line once I get more hands-on experience. If you have any tips for a beginner working on a turbo 1.6 or tuning with MS, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks for having me!

A few considerations

MS is not diy friendly. Best advice is seek out a Calabrator that has experience with it and will build you a few files
Don't get so carried away with injector size. It a misconception with first timers.

Get a chassis DYNO ASAP to get a base line on your power levels.

I am assuming you completely health checked the engine prior to the engine upgrades?

Sorry I can’t comment about MS it’s not used anymore in any ECU/EFI Calabrator circular or Tunning forums I have been in since the early 2000. Most of us we have all tried it and know the challenge limitations and down falls to it .
