98 Mazda Proteg'e 1.5 DOHC Timing Belt
I am stillin the process of replacing the timing belt on a 98 Proteg'e with the 1.5 DOHC engine. The problems I have run into is getting the correct length belt. The aftermarket part stores are telling me there are only two belts it can be. The one is way too long, the other one is too short. I tried even another manufacturer brand of belt, and same thing happened, too short. If I install the belt that is suppose to be corect it is way too tight, andthe belt howls badly. I found that by leaving the fixed belt idler off, and only using the adjustable tensioner, I can retain proper tension and run the engine without any loud noises from the belt. I went to a Mazda dealer to get the OEM belt, used a measure device for belts, the OEM belt is too short as well. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Note: I even replaced both tensioners thinking it was the noise originally, but it still is wayyyyy to tight. ??????
