I have a 1994 Mazda Protege with an automatic transmission that sat for over a year, when we finally got it running it ran great for 2 weeks then it wouldn't shift gears so we replaced the filter and fluid and it ran good again for about 1 week then the same problem accured. When we first start it, it will shift into first then act like it's in neutral and not go anywhere, could it be something besides the transmission itself? everyone I talk to just wants to replace the tranny without even considering it could be anything else.
