i don't think that the bolts will line up if you keep the same trans. you can find a motor and transmission for pretty cheap as a combo. the motor may need a rebuild, but you can find people who will rebuild it for you. make sure that you get a package that is complete with the starter, trans, motor, etc. so that you can make a fairly clean swap.

this swap has been done a lot and i think that there are plenty of people who can help you out. e-mail dan@atkinsrotary.com and tell him what you are trying to do. he will help you out with motor mounts, engine management, and general tuning. he has a supercharged, rotary-swapped b-series pick-up.

i thought about swapping a v8 but those are way to common. lots of people (who have very very limited experience with rotary engines) tell me they are junk because they dont last long and require very special care?

I don't claim to be a rotary expert. I've driven a 2005 RX-8 for about 5 years and nearly 80K miles. I've had no problems with the engine. I haven't raced it and a lot of those miles are easy highway miles. But I think if you keep up with oil changes and the other routine maintainence tasks, a rotary can be as reliable as a piston engine.
