Default Steering Wheel Tap Feel

I own a 2005 Mazda 6 Wagon. There is a slight intermittent tapping/knockingthat I can feel in the steering wheel when driving. Especially when taking off, slowing down or sometimes turning. I can feel this hit or vibrate something while holding the steering wheel..
What could be the problem? It is something that I can feel while holding the steering wheel.

Thanks

As you drive down the road (highway would be the worst condition), does the steering wheel wiggle back/forth a little? I've had symptoms like that before on other cars I've owned and replacing the tie-rod ends and getting an alignment has done the trick each time.

No wiggle at all! It is a slight tap/knock that happens occasionally that when it does happenyou can feel it in the grip of holding the steering wheel!

Maybe, possibly, a cv joint dying prematurely? You don't state the mileage on your car, but it's only two years old, so if it IS a cv joint failing, that would sure seem premature, unless your car has TONS of miles on it.

The intermittent part is what is stumping me.....If you only have 16,000 miles on it, I'd take it to the dealer and have it investigated under warranty.

Correction, this feel that is while holding the steering wheel is not due to turning.!!
What is a possible cause of a tapping or knock feel in the steering wheel column?

I have an 04 wagon with the same problem. I recently took it to the dealer and they claim it is some type of cover for the front suspension, more specifically the coils. If you still have the warranty coverage go in and have them check that out. The mechanic found it on one of their TSB's. I am waiting for them to get the part in to see if it actually resolves the issue. By the way, does your tranny never find the right gear and is slow to down shift if you accelerate after it shifts into 2nd or 3rd?

I had the same thing with my '06 Gran Touring. There is a TSB on the issue. The dealer performed the TSB and my car is fine. It felt like there was something loose in the steering linkage and I could feel it going over bumps or on left hand turns. The TSB called for them re-greasing the steering column I believe. I had to wait 2 weeks because the grease packs needed were on back order. It sounds like you have the same issue.
