Default Starter gap?

Hey folks ... I just put on a new starter and it hasa strange "gap" between the front of the housing and the tranny about 3mm wide. Yes, the bolts are torqued all the way. I noticed a small gap like this when I removed the old starter, so I was not that concerned. It seems to turn the engine over fine and everything. Has anyone else seen this or know what the deal is?

If the old starter had the gap, I wouldn't worry about it. Was there any grinding/binding in the starter when you cranked it? So long as the solenoid fires cleanly and the starter gear properly engages the flywheel (flat and at the right depth) you should be just fine. If you didn't hear any strange noises, you are most likely OK. (Starters tend to give a clear indication when they aren't aligned properly...massive grinding noises, like trying to put your car into gear without using the clutch.)

Thanks folks! There was no grinding at all. It just seems odd that there is a little gap because I would think it could let road debris into the tranny. CanI post pictures on here? I could take one tonight and post it to show you what I'm talking about if that would help.
