Default Rim and tire question

Hey everybody. I am new here and actually do not own a Mazda6 but my girlfriend does and she is having problems with rims and tires. I am a subaru owner so im not sure if things are exactly the same.
Here is the problem:
She got new rims and tires about a year ago and they are wearing on the outsides of the tire really bad. She has no other mods (not lowered or anything), just rims and tires.
She bought Jaagruti 18x8 rims and they put 215/40/18 tires on them. To me, the tires look way to thin for 8inch wide rims, so i believe this is why they are wearing wrong. I looked at a rim and tire chart that compares after market rims and tires to stock rims and tires and found that a 225/45/18 or a 225/40/18 tires would make the wheel the closest to the stock rim and tire size.
With that, i think that this would solve the wearing issue.
She took it to a tire shop and they said that it is wearing like that because the rim is too big, (too wide), and that it was not because the tire was too thin. I thought that was a load of crap because i got 8inch wide rims on my suby and i have no wearing problems.

So, if any of you have the same setup and have recommendation about tire sizes or anything, or have similar issues, please help me out here. She needs a good all season tire and not too low profile.

Thanks

I've ran 225/45ZR18 tires on 18x8 RX-8 wheels for years with no issues on my wife's Mazda6 wagon. They do tend to wear on the inside edge due to the stock negative camber inherent to the design of the Mazda6, but with regular rotation you can minimize this.

I agree a 215 is too narrow for an 8" wide rim.

Have you had the alignment checked on the car?

Not yet, that is in the process, but I am sure she does need one. Do you have any pictures of your mazda 6 with those rims and tires on it. I just want to get an idea of the look.

Your mazda 6 has stock suspension, correct?

If you got a pic or 2 could you send them to my email? Thanks

Having some trouble posting pics for some reason...there are a couple of my wife's car in this thread. If you turn the wheels to full lock it can rub, but how often does that really occur.

We've got ~78,000 miles on my wife's car with no problems.

That's actually pretty funny!!
You've got 8 wheels on the 6, and 6 wheels on the 3!!!
