Default reading codes on a 2005 mazda6

my wife has the 2005 mazda6i,70,000miles and the engine light came on.few weeks ago.my ODBII scan tool doesnt reconize it so i unhooked the battery and set the tripmeter.500 miles later it came back on...what tool do i need to check codes on this car? the scan tool i have is a 2 year old cheapo so maybe a new one is in order?but really cant find anything im sure will work on this car.car runs really great but im thinking a tune up and fuel /air/pvc filters bla bla bla.undo battery then see what happens.but gotta have a scan tool for it... OH got the car 2 years ago with 55,000 on it

Easiest thing would prob be to take it to the dealer, or try Autozone.

Default thought of that

but im sure MAZDA would charge us about a hundred to tell us,and autozone would tell us for free, heading there now, but i just wana do it myself.im thinking its the new OBD-II CAN protocal on her car.Ebay has one for 10 bucks, basic cheapo, so may take a chance.i have a millenia S and i couldnt live without my scanner ,the car shoulda came with one.i was heading to autozone every 2 days, then finally bought a cheap one,kinda,50$.says its upgradable but doesnt say to what, and i need to find a USB to 25 pin connector to find out.ill let you know
