question about oils.....
WHAT ABOUT THE ADDITIVES IN THE ORIGINAL OIL SUPPOSEDLY TO HELP BREAK IN ??? IS IT B.S. ???
What is the initial break-in period in miles according to you ?
In the owner's manual (section 4-page 7) they specify : ' No special break-in is necessary , but a few precautions in the first 1,000 km (600 miles) may add to the performance , economy , and life of your Mazda .
- don't race the engine
- don't maintain one constant speed , either slow or fast , for a long period of time
- don't drive constantly at full throttle or high engine rpm for extended periods of time
- avoid unecessary hard stops
-avoid full throttle starts '

I have not heard of "break-in" oil in many years...long gone. I would say your manual is correct, 1000 miles is correct for a good break-in. Most all manufacturers build a much better engine nowadays, so there is no long term break-in period. Most important point is to vary your speed, vary the RPMs on the highway so the rings will seat properly.
Ya so what I'll do is break her in real good , say at least 2-3000 km then get her flowing with the cream of oils .
I try to run her in different rpms but with the speed limit you can't stretch it too much over on the highway (at 100km/h it does @ 3000-3200 rpms )I've brouth her up to 145 km/h without staying there more that a few thousand feet at a time .
When I change gears I try to not pass 4000 rpms in the 3rd gear & up .... going up gradually up to 4000 max ; as the salesman warned .
What happens if I do that , and then later after break-in period , I start going past the 4000 mark ?
Also can someone explain what's going on inside the cylinders when 'break-in occurs , and more importantly ; what happens when driven at same rpms for long period of time ??? Can someone demistify this for us newbies to new engines ?

Well by personal experience I can tell you it's definatly not wise to race the engine durring that first 3000k. I hit about 6.5 rpm and low and behold check engine light pops on. Got the code on it from my reader looked it up and it was a cylinder 1 misfire. Just means that the seal wasn't seated right and I pushed it a tad too hard for the first time. Haven't had that problem since though and I've got 6k on her now.
