PCV Valve Removal
On my '99 1.8L Protege LX, the PCV valve is inserted into a big grommet, and you just pry or manhandle it out. I replace both the PCV valve and the grommet; take it with you when you buy the PCV. You're safe using auto parts replacements, and they sell the valves and the grommets too.
PS: Once it's out and cleaned up a bit, check if it rattles, and suck and blow on it to see if the check valve works; you may find there's nothing wrong with it. At the same time, check the hose condition (the hose is more prone to fail than the valve).

How many miles on your mazda6s? I plan to change it on 45,000 miles. What is part number on OEM PCV?
I have over 71,000 miles on it and this is the first time that I have changed the valve.
**Heres The Trick**
I acquired some new 5/8" Hose (several feet too many at Home Depot). Removed Old Hose from old PCV Valve, cleaned oil off old Valve with a clean rag. Took a foot and a half length of the new TIGHT FITTING Hose and pressed it onto the old Valve to use as a Driver to turn the old Vavle out Counterclockwise...Then attatch the new Valve to the new length and install it...Trim to length, and DONE!
Hope this helps a few of You!
