Default Parts Costs

I was sipping on some Thursday evening special $.94 drinks last evening with my Father-in-law chatting about cars since he just bought a new G6 Coupe (decent ride, but not for me) and I am in the market in the coming months. The Mazda 6 and Speed3 are on my list, high up on the list. (If myself or wife get a new job I may opt for the Speed6!)

One thing he mentioned to me is that if I buy foreign, make sure to lease it as it will be very expensive to repair down the road. How much truth is there to that? Are there a lot of Ford parts in Mazdas these days that would reduce the cost of the parts? Are Mazdas that much more reliable that the increased cost of parts is offset by the low frequency of repairs? Or does he have a point and I will be met with a large series of bills in 2010?

I appreciate all the responses I anticipate!

Stavros

Foreign cars are more expensive to repair, but they also tend to have less problems then domestic cars...I believe some ford parts may work in the 6...

Very expensive if you happe to get into an accident (but that's what insurace is for)... it cost me $5k to fix my drivers side after getting plowed into by an idiot. Parts for the 6s are quite expensive in general though...

Mazda6 is made in the US (at least for the North American market) and is roughly 65% domestic content. Parts aren't that bad for them as the service parts are sourced domestically in many cases as well.

what are you compairing them to? In the automotive world they aren't, maybe just in general yes, but next to other cars repairs are cheap.
