Default Mazda6 New Clutch System

I picked up my 2nd hand Mazda6 2.3i sport, in the middle of Jan 2009. I have had it for less than 3 months. It came with a standard one year warrenty. The dealer that I purchased it from did an MOT and full service on the car days before me picking it up.
2 weeks ago it started to have a burning smell, high revs - no power being transfered to the road! Took it back to the dealer and they determined that the clutch was shot and it neaded replacing! However, wear and tear is not covered in the gauruntee!

My question is - does a clutch just go or is it a gradual process? - is it likely that this kind of fault should have been picked up by the dealer when servicing the car, and they should have informed me that this was work needing to be done!

The cost of replacing the clutch appears to be an expensive affair - £840.
The dealer has offered to cover half of the expense - should I accept this or negotiate further?

Assistance required.

Clutch normally goes bad gradually and a lot depends on how you drive. How many miles the car has? Dealer pays 1/2 is fair.

Hi RX4to6,

Thanks for the advice - I think that will be my course of action.
My only assumption is that the previous owners thrashed the car!

Cheers
