and most importantly 100% japanese
And made in Mexico too, BTW (at least the ones built for the US market are). This same engine is used in the Ford Focus and Fusion (4-cyl).
they share the 2.0, the 2.3 however is 100% mazda. oh and i forgot, the mazda tribute and b series are just rebadged Ford Edge, Ranger. i beleive the 2.0 was developed by mazda as well i may be wrong tho not quite sure

Basically, 4-cylinder engines are Mazda designs while the 6-cylinder engines are varaitions ofFord's Duratec V6. BTW, here's an interesting read.

So is the 6 cyl from the Ford product line? That really scares me if this is the case.

You'll have to decide for youself, but the Duratec engine has proven to be a reliable, solid design. Just FYI, Ford controls more than 33% of Mazda which, in Japan, is controlling interest.

I've got 47,000 on my wagon with no problems at all. My question is should I buy the extended warranty? What problems have been coming up?
I'm a newbie so I apologies if this has come up before.

I have an '04 6s with 75k miles on it and I just blew the engine. Within a week it went from running strong to having a loud ticking and blowing heavy blue smoke. Taken it to the dealer they said my cats are blown and i have no oil pressure. They say buy a new engine @5500 dollars.

Sounds like you'rethe victim of a failed PCV valve. I guess the moral of the story is that we had better be dogmatic about checking and maintaining the whole PCV system. I'm sorry to hear that you had a catastrophic engine failure.

Actually the PCV valve is fine and the egine is clean as a whistle. the oil is pristine, So far I have been able to narrow it down to a failed oil pump and worn out oil rings. I am doing the rebuild myself,(may take a week as complicted as this engine is).
