I bought a new '06 6 Sin April of 2007. So, 9 months later, I am dealing with Mazda about a buy back. This car looks like it will fall under Alabama Lemon Law. Had it in the shop 5 times for a "missfire" and CEI. Number 4 cylinder code p0304. They have reprogramed the PCM twice, replaced the coil pack, and replaced the right catalytic converter. The car has passed 2 compression tests but now the had an engineer from Georgia come look at it and he says compression leak right bank and will need a new engine.

IMHO, forget about the 6 cylinder. One of the service techs says they have "considerably more problems" than the 4 cyl.

The dealers leave something to be desired, I admit, but the cars are great and I was confident enough in their build to do mods that will void parts of my warranty.
Does that answer your question/satisfy your need for reassurance?

Any given vehicle from any given manufacturer can have a porblem at any given moment. Mazda is certainly not the worst thing out there and given poper maintaince, yours should last for quite some time. It would be nice if they offered something along the lines of a 100,000 mile warranty, but given that they are a comparatively small auto maker that probably wont happen anytime soon.

the 6 cylinder models have the last generation Ford taures engine in them. I specifically asked the dealer about these cars when i purchased my 07 mazda3. I had concerns that Ford owned 33% of mazda ( thus controling the company under japanese law) but was assured that the only thing shared by the mazda family and thier ford bretheren, at least powertrain wise, are the 6 cylinder's you find in the mazda6. The four cylinder 2.3 is a very refined, sturdy engine in my experience and most importantly 100% japanese

And made in Mexico too, BTW (at least the ones built for the US market are). This same engine is used in the Ford Focus and Fusion (4-cyl).

I haven't had mine long enough to comment on reliabilty, but I do have a co-worker who has 168,000km on his 4cyl, and hasn't had any major problems with his. That was the main reason I bought mine. If it is the same engine as the Fusion (not the Focus, it only comes with a 2.0 not a 2.3) then I would be very confident, as consumer reports has done nothing but rave about the reliabilty of the Fusion thus far.
