I have a 2003 Mazda 6. The check engine light keeps coming on periodically. This had been going on for a couple weeks. I had to get a new battery yesterday, the other had completely died. I dont think that the battery has anything to do with this..I am just wondering if anyone has ran into similar circumstances and could give me some advice before paying 80.00 for a diagnostic check.

 

check to make sure the gas cap is secure! I had a similiar occurance for about 2-3 days. Sure enough, the gas cap was not secure. I hope that is all it is.

 

When I had a CEL light up on my Jeep I was able to take it to Auto Zone and they ran the diagnostic on for me for free, so you may want to check at your local auto parts store before you pay some one to do that for you.

I actually took it to the local mazda dealer. Apparently there was some computer update that was needed for it. Shouldnt I have been notified of any updates needed for the vehicles computer? That doesnt seem right to me.
Now I am paying 100 dollars for this. Cant say I am too happy.

 

Ah, the joys of dealing with dealerships. But yes, I would have thought you would be notified of needing something like that, unless it was a problem that had arisen only recently and the notices hadn't been sent out yet.
