Default Mazda 6 2007 Series 2 question - camchain or cam belt

Hey there guys,

I've got a question about a Mazda I'm looking at buying but I'm quite confused about a couple of things.

The car is a 2007 MAZDA 6 GY Series 2 MZR-CD (Diesel) Wagon and it has 119800km's on the clock. I know that at 120000 you need to get the cambelt changed but I'm confused if this particular model has a cambelt or a cam chain (whichif it has a cam chain I wouldn't need to worry about changing it).

It, and most other Australian models in 2007 state that it's a series 2, which according to my research, should have a cam chain but the series 2 wasn't launched until 2008! Very confusing. It seems like great car but I don't want to have to pay a giant wad of cash a few months after I purchase it.

Can one of you very knowledgeable lads help me out

Just following on from what I've said above, I'm getting more confused as I'm seeing quite a few full reviews stating that the diesel is a chain as well as some of the service manuals... then I come across a forum like this..

Belt or Chain driven? - Mazda 6 Forums : Mazda 6 Forum / Mazda Atenza Forum

and specifically...

"Diesel versions use belt
Gasoline Version use chain"

I'm really confused as the only problem I can see with purchasing this car is that the cam belt may need replacing at 120000km but I can't figure out if it has one or not! IS there anything else I should look out for with a 2007 Diesel??

I'm sorry but I know nothing about Mazda's diesel engines. Here in the US we only get petrol engined cars... though there has been talk of bringing the diesels here.
We have members from all over the world here, so hopefully someone from Europe or Australia will chime in to help you out.
Again sorry.

Hey there Virgin1, thanks for the post. It's a tricky thing over here in the OZ, it seems that the names, dates and series are all a touch out of whack to the rest of the world. I did find out one piece of info that may be helpful to other users ..

The Mazda 6 Diesel has both a timing chain and a belt. Hence my confusion. I ended up calling a Mazda service center and this mechanic was so helpful. He also mentioned that the 120000km service is the biggest that the diesels have in their lifetime costing approx $1400. He mentioned that the owners of the cars usually don't bat an eyelid at the price as the running costs are so low.
