Default engine knock diagnosis

Hi everyone. Im new to this forum and Mazdas. I recently purchased a '04 mazda 6 with the 2.3L. I was told the engine is shot. I was planning on replacing it, after i got it home i ran it and it is knocking. it is not a bottom end bearing, it is coming from the top of the motor. i pulled the valve cover and see no obvious signs of wear on the valvetrain or cams or timing components. the oil is not contaminated. the knock is for the most part a consistent knock with engine speed but after knocking for a handfull of revolutions it will not knock a couple revolutions and then continue. engine temperature does not effect the knock.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey Kevin Just new to forum. I have same problem. 03 Mazda 3S was ran very low on oil, but doesn't sound like main or wrist pin and makes pronounced noise at between 2000 and 2300 rpm. Got me puzzled. Mazda dealer said cam chain hydralic tensioners, but cams are aligned with crank on top dead center with valve cover off. I don't know about when running. Tried that oil everywhere. Good Luck.
