Default engine fan running after car is off....

My girlfriend says for the first time since she has owned the car, in the last 2 years, that she started hearing the electric fan running after the car has been shut off. I'm assuming it's the fan without knowing what else it could be.

Anyhow, I told her it's probably normal since her temp gauge reads in the middle (normal) and she has good heat. She thinks it's someting to be concerned about and I told her it's just the fan doing it's job but she insists she has NEVER heard it before, especially after the car is turned off.

What noise is she hearing? Is it the fan and why would she just now be hearing it run in 2 years?

That is a normal function since the fan is thermostatically controlled! A lot of heat is generated in the engine compartment after turning off the engine.

Actually, you are incorrect. After doing some more research and posting on other boards, it's because of a faulty fan control module, which is notorious for failing. So, if yours is continuing to run AFTER the engine is off, or comes on as soon as you turn the key on, when the engine is cold, then you probably have a faulty one also.

It really depends on the engine configuration! Cars that had belt-driven fans always ran. Then they converted to electric fans! Some of my cars had twin electric fans. One for the engine and an auxiliary fan to compensate for the AC. The main fan ran all the time and the Auxiliary, that was thermostatically controlled, only ran at high temperatures. It would stay on even after the engine was shut off to cool down the engine. I know that was normal as stated by the dealer service techs. Remind me to tell you the story of the time I was driving my 1973 240Z on I-95 and the belt-driven fan snapped off the engine and slammed into the radiator.

I apologize for reviving this old thread. Got the same issue recently, turns out that my coolant level was too low, the tendency is the fan will still work to lower the coolant temperature into the radiator. I found this article that abled me to identify the problem, if you search "Car Fan Still On When Engine is Turned Off on YOUCANIC" read about it yourself. I hope this information will help others that face a similar issue.

Both fans in my cx 7 start to run even when the engine is stone cold. Initially I thought I had a battery issue, but I could hear the fans running last night.
if I put the key in the ignition and turn the key to the on position the fans stop running, take the key out of the ignition fans kick in again.
I've disconnected the battery for now, but could someone advise me what the issue maybe....faulty relay, module etc

thanks J

Most of these response are a concern that needs to be checked. While if all circumstances are correct the ECU at times will control the fans after shut down but it is generally not the case with MAZDA from about 2014 and newer with how the ECU programing is.
I might also add that I would never rely on looking at a tempreture gauge in the dash that you are always assuming that if it is in the middle the temperatures are ok when you have any temperature operating concern.

For the sake of a good relationship if the girlfriend say she never herd it before i would get your Mazda checked by a competent service shop with trained diagnostic Technician's (not mechanic's) or Mazda! .

Don't disconnect your battery fans should shut down after no more then 5 minutes. Your fans draw a very small power and could run for over 20-30 minutes before depleting the battery to a no start voltage.

If the fans continue than as I suggested in the last response take it to a service shop because at this point it could be one or more of numerous concerns?

YouTube videos for DIY are not your friend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If any none professional like a DIY is going to work on thier own vehicles they should at least invest in a FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL.

Thank you for the advice Callisto, starting point is to get a diagnostic check which should highlight the fault/s which the car is not displaying. I will then look to replace any faulty components. I will update once I understand what’s creating the issue.
