Default Door Key

We had a plain flat key blank cut to carry in the wallet to open the door of a '08 Mazda 6 in case we locked the real key in the car away from home.

We found that the cut key would lock the door but not unlock the door. We also found that while the cut key would lock and unlock the glove box door, it would not turn the ignition switch.

Does anyone know if the door will only unlock with a chipped key or the fob, or do we simply have a poorly cut flat key?

I say you've got a badly cut key. Take a closer look between the original and your copy. The door has no chip reader, soyour plain key should work.

Thank you for the information.

I'm still puzzled as to why it would turn easily in locking direction and not at all in the un-locking direction. Any thoughts on this?

Sounds like only one side of the double sided key is not cut right. Try put the key in the other way and turn.

i just got a cut key for my wallet yesterday actually. the key should definitely be able to lock and unlock your door from the outside. as for ignition, it absolutely will not work. i know that for a fact. why? because i tried... even when holding the stock key by the ignition area while using the cut key
