Default Crank position sensor

So i plan on changing it when the stuff comes in, had some issues lately acting like it's out of time. My question is, is there a special tool to actually turn the crank to set it to tdc? Some say there is and some say there isn't but I'm not sure and haven't tore into it yet. Btw it's a 2003 mazda 6 with the 2.3

Yes, there is a set of tools actually. Mazda engines do not use keyways on crank pulley or cam gears. If you do not properly lock down the cams and set the crank, the valves will slip out of time. The 2.3L is a interference motor. That means if the valve is open when the piston reaches the top of it's stroke, the valve and piston will meet, in an ugly way. What is leading you to believe timing is out?

Not the timing being off, i think the crank position sensor is bad making it act like it's out of time at certain ranges. The CEL is for p0340 and I changed the cam sensor with no change in the way it runs. I don't need to change the toning at least not yet that i know of, just need the special tool to turn the motor by the crankshaft pulley

P0340 is a cam code. possibly wiring at the plug for the sensor, PCM or you did have a cam move. I've seen timing jump from an accident too. If your going to replace the crank sensor, there is a hole in the crank pulley. Line it up with the hole in the timing cover, aprox 12 o'clock. The timing cover is threaded so a bolt can go thru the pulley and into the cover. Then you can line up the crank sensor with the notch on the tone ring. you'll be able to see all that before you remove the old one

Voltage checks good on the cam sensor, i replaced it already. The only reason i don't think it's jumped time is are warm up it idles fine and drives fine until you hot about 3500 rpms then the cel comes on and the rpms gauge jumps up and then down to around 500 but the motor isn't stalling to 500 rpms. After that the gauge is all over the place whether it's hesitating or not. I have a pdf on how to change the ckp sensor just don't know if there is a special tool that turns the crank pulley or not

DTC P0340
Camshaft position (CMP) sensor circuit malfunction
DETECTION CONDITION

• The PCM monitors the input voltage from the CMP sensor when the engine is running. If the PCM does not receive the input voltage from the CMP sensor while the PCM receives input signal from the CKP sensor, the PCM determines that the CMP circuit has a malfunction.
Diagnostic support note
• This is a continuous monitor (CCM).
• The MIL illuminates if the PCM detects the above malfunction condition during the first drive cycle.
• The PENDING CODE is available if the PCM detects the above malfunction condition.
• The FREEZE FRAME DATA is available.
• The DTC is stored in the PCM memory.
POSSIBLE CAUSE

• CMP sensor malfunction
• Connector or terminal malfunction
• The CMP sensor is dirty
• Short to power circuit between CMP sensor terminal A and PCM terminal 2M
• Short to power circuit between CMP sensor terminal B and PCM terminal 2J
• Short to ground circuit between CMP sensor terminal A and PCM terminal 2M
• Short to ground circuit between CMP sensor terminal B and PCM terminal 2J
• Open circuit between CMP sensor terminal A and PCM terminal 2M
• Open circuit between CMP sensor terminal B and PCM terminal 2J
• CKP sensor pulse wheel malfunction
• Both CMP sensor wires are shorted to each other
• CKP sensor misinstallation
• Timing chain misinstallation
• Loose timing chain or improper valve timing due to chain jumping
• Loose camshaft sprocket lock bolt
• Loose crankshaft pulley lock bolt

Got it done last night crank sensor fixed the problem, thanks guys.
