Check engine light 6 times
I have a 2003 6S and from Jan 05 thru last week the car has been back to the dealer 6 times for CEL. They have replaced the "canister and evap sys l" 3 times. They say the problem is overfilling the gas tank which lets fuel into the overflow tube. The gas tank was dropped twice. Several recalls were done. I don't know if they applied to this problem . I live in NJ and cannot pump gas myself. They also asked if the gas cap is on tight. Anybody experience this? I was thinking about beginning some Lemon law proceedings. I can't believe others aren't experiencing this problem and a vehicle would have such a problem. Can anyone shed some light on this problem???
i do agree, i've never had that problem and i always round up to the nearest dollar just like mrspike... i have the '05 model. i've even actually gotten a little bit of gas to be overfilled and still have yet to have that CEL come on because of it...
Does the car exhibit any other symptoms other than the tripped code? How many miles on the car? Which specific code # is getting tripped?
You can get a code from over-filling the tank or by not tightening the gas cap. Best bet is to just gas up to the first click of the pump turning off. Try that for a while and see if the issue is resolved. Make sure you tell the pump operator that (I'm sure @ $3.00+ a gallon that they are trying to pump in every last drop.) Also make sure that they tighten the gas cap until it clicks.

A lot of problems with the evap emissions leak detection pump to devolop evap leak concerns which sounds like you are having. What is the code # that keeps coming up? There is a solution dirofip. We are here to help.
With regards to the gas cap, I can tell you I cram my tank full every time I fill up...I probably click the handle 6 times. Never had any issues in 12k miles (and I get 500 miles on a tank).

At the risk of hijacking this thread, my gas light comes on between 440 and 490 miles, usually around 475. After the light comes on, I usually try to gas up within 30 miles, but when I gas up it still only takes 15 to 16gal, when the tank is 18gal, so that light definitely comes on early. I get 31mpg now consistent over the last 3k miles...4cyl 5spd, "pizza cutter" stock tires.
