I just bought a 2009 Mazda 6 I Touring with the 4 cyclinder and Auto Trans. It only has about 300 miles on it. I noticed today that the trans is a bit jerky in stop and go traffic on the highway. Is this normal?

I would think not. The Mazda dealer should be able to reflash or tweak the trans computer to help eliminate any jerkiness.

 

Thanks for the advice. I will contact the dealer. If it is a tweaking issue with the transmission computer, that means the structural functionality of the transmission itself is ok? As you can tell, I do not know much about a car's powertrain.

 

The powerplant has got to bed in on the engine mounts for a while, so unless it's intolerable I'd be inclined to wait a bit, say 1500 mi. or first service, whichever is sooner, and then have it attended too; otherwise you might have to have it dealt with twice.
The other issue is that some Power Control Modules have become quite "smart", and contain adaptive algorithms which take a while to get to "know" your driving style; furthermore if you're sharing the driving with someone who doesn't drive like you, the PCM takes longer to find a happy compromise (i.e. is equally displeasing to all users).
If your problem were at all serious, you would undoubtedly be getting warning lights, or unexpected dropout of overdrive, so it's probably no big deal.
Disclaimer: I am a diehard stick shifter, and every post I see concerning automatics does absolutely nothing to persuade me to reconsider this position.

 

I did not know how 'smart' the systems were. I will hold off and let the car break in a bit, and get it looked at during the first service visit. I appreciate the help. Thanks again.

 

I noticed this somewhat with my new one too. It now has just turned 2K miles and it has seemed to smooth out. Having my wife and daughter both driving it in addition to myself hasn't made its 'learning' process any easier.

Whether bedding in or learning drivers styles, or all of the above, it does seem to improve considerably with a few miles.
