2004 Mazda 6S wagon - starter issue?
Help!
In the past 6 months, my 2004 Mazda 6S wagon makes a noiselike a pneumatic drill when I try to start the car. The engine doesn't turn over and I have to try it 2-3 times before it will start. Once the car starts, I have no other problems. I have a manual transmission and have the clutch engaged.
I've brought it to theMazda dealership for an evaluation. They could not find any issues (or duplicate the noise)and they told me the charging system is fine.
The problem seems to be occuring more frequently. I'm concerned that the car will eventually not start at all.
Any thoughts on this? I'd like to get it fixed before the warranty expires.
Many thanks..........

RE: 2004 Mazda 6S wagon - starter issue?
You might have the infamous clutch dust issue. On the V6 models (not sure of the 4cyl), dust from the clutch gets into the starter & causes it to have that awful sound during startup. I have had the same issue on my '05 6S for quite a while. A lot of dealerships misdiagnose the sound as being a bad starter & change it, only to have the new starter to start doing the same thing a little later.
