Glad I found this forum, thought it was my driving but I'm going through tyres like mad - inside edge on both front and rears keep geting worn to nothing.

My Mazda is 5 Sport, running on a 57 plate but as it was just after the plate change I got her suspect its built in early 2007 if not earlier.

I this you have the older rear problem as well, unless Mazda swapped the wheels from front to rear during a service, which they do and not tell you. So your part worns go to rear and the better rears go on front then get worn. Then you need to change all 4.

Default 4 Wheel Alignment?

Hi all, I've just bought a 5 and was a new and proud owner of a 07 2.0 Mazda 5 petrol sport untill i found this site. Not so happy now, checked my tyres and have LingLong (Never heard of them , googled and didnt like what i found) tyres on the front presumably to hide the wear, and the back tyres have half inch strips of slick tyre mostly on the inside! Gutted. I have read a lot of these posts, but still have one major question?

Has anyone had 4 wheel laser aligning done, and if so did it make any difference?

I spoke to a chap who said he has done a few and had no unhappy returns, although this doesn't mean it was cured. He claims they have a very similar set-up as the focus ( no camber adjust on the rear, but has toe etc)
Any help as tyres screwed and need to change them asap.
Cheers

Hello dave, and welcome to the forum.

I have a 2.0d Sport 2007 and don't suffer from the problem at all. I've now done 7k miles and the tread across the entire width of every tyre looks normal. I check every month or so, as the car is still under warranty, so if i could claim, i'd certainly try. ;-)

the 5 shares the same platform as several other cars, including the Focus C-Max and certain Volvos too. I did try searching for other forum notes on tyre wear and only found isolated incidents.

I have Avon tyres on my 5 pumped up to 35PSI all round, which is best advice on here, as apparently the toe/camber is set to suit a full load, and the recommended PSI for full load is 35PSI. That way the middle of the tread should wear as much as the outer edges.

Another theory is that the rear shocks aren't strong enough and fail, which can attribute itself to increased tyre wear too. I have just had one shock on my car replaced under warranty.

Hope this helps in some small way. Cheers, Tony

Hi Dave, if you trawl through this thread, there are print-outs from a few of us who have had 4 wheel laser alignments. In my case I've had it done twice, I paid for one and Mazda UK paid for the other. In both cases the "before" and "after" read-outs were virtually identical, and the tyres continued to wear on the inside edges. As soon as I switched to a different brand, it all came good on my car.

See below a previous message. I've since sold the car but the tyre wear problem had gone since the last alignment was done. If the car is laser aligned to Mazda specifications the problem will remain. You need to find a specialist who will set the car up to what works rather than what Mazda says. I don't know who did mine on behalf of the dealer but they were somewhere near Norwich Airport if that helps.
Wrights Mazda, Norwich may be able to help, ask for Sean.

The rear tyres (Bridgestone)I had fitted about 3000 miles ago (12 tyres in total of 29000 miles)are still looking good. My dealer sent the car for a full digital alignment at a specialist. When it came back the handling and steering response was vastly improved to the extent that it felt like a different car. Time will tell, but it looks like after 2.5 years of tyres and dealer alignment, my car MAY be fixed at last.

Default Hello Dave. Welcome.

I’ve got a 58 plate 2.0 5 sport.
Original Brigstones lasted 20k. In honesty all 4 were knackered at 15k. I had a blow out on M5. Could have been very serious. Shame on me.

I had two independent laser alignments. Both free (no change no charge). Car was almost spot on to Mazda's recommended setting.
No one was willing to tinker with the Geometry for me.
Both read-outs scanned and viewable on this forum.

I've now got ContiSport Contact's (can’t remember exactly what, wife out in car at mo) A rear shock dumped all it's oil at 21k. I Had it replaced under warrantee.

26k now. Running tyres at 37-38psi (keeping a close eye on maintaining this) as per a couple of recommendations on this site. Absolutely no sign of inner or outer scrubbing. I believe my old tyres were probably running lower than 32psi helping to add to their poor condition. Early days yet. But advice on this site proving very useful.

Good luck with yours.

Chris.

Default Noticing first signs of inner edge wear at 7500

Been checking my fronts every month since I had the previous tyres replaced (after being bald on the inside edge after 8000 miles), and am finally noticing some wear on the same area.

I've deliberately kept the tyres at 36 psi in the hope this would stop it, but it seems it hasn't. I've now increased it to 40 psi and will carry on monitoring closely.

Interesting the outer edge of my fronts also shows some wear - not as severe as the inside edge, but much worse than the rear tyres (which are on 15500!).

So I'm wondering if the wear is happening specifically when the car is cornering rather than going straight. This would explain why there are more complaints from UK drivers than drivers from the USA (they have longer, straighter roads, and less corners/roundabouts in the US).

Good point iainso

I was in U.S. couple of weeks ago and was so tempted to talk to the owner of a 5 sport with a Texas plate. It was hot and he was preoccupied with family so I chickened out.

None the less it's a tall and relatively heavy car. If you're correct you go to feel sorry for those living in Milton Keynes.
