Has anyone determined if this is isolated to given production time range? It would be nice if all those seeing this issue could post the production date and location (probably all Hiroshima, JP) to see if we can get some correlation data.

Mine was built in 01/07, Hiroshima and is showing uniform tire wear at 1800 miles.

on a side note, the manufacture label is blank in regards to tire specs and there is an additional sticker below it that has this information. Recommended tire pressure is 34psi.

I guess if you consider I have had the offer of 2/3rds of my invoice for all four tyres then Mazda are admitting to a problem with the fronts.
I had the following Michelins fitted by the way - 205/50VR17 Prim G1 XL93V at ETB in Cheltenham for £97.80 eac, by the time you add disposal charge, tubeless valves and wheel balance, plus VAT the cost went up to £245.00 for two tyres.
ETBalso phoned Mazda direct to obtain all the settings and confirmed the geometry was not correct.
This was when I started my arguement with the local dealer. I have been told that as the dealership was so new, no other customers who had purchased the 5 Sport had complained about the tyre problem.
Anyone who has problems with the front and/or rear tyres should make an official complaint to MMUK and obtain an incidentreference number, this is the procedure I went through. Keep your tyres as the dealers have to measure the tread depth and then they fill in a two page report, attach your receipt and await the official responce. This took just under a week by the way, and it was a verbal offer not written, via the dealer from MMUK.
I will let you know when the cheque lands on the mat.
Good luck with the claims.

The mileage is 10,000. It has had new tyres all round. I noticed that both fronts were slightly scuffed on the inside already and mentioned this. I was told by the guy who has hadthe car(the Ford service manager) that the tyres were changed before the geometry had modified, hence the scuffing. I asked the sales woman if I bought the car could I have it in writing that the tyre problem was sorted, but she wouldn't commit.

Paul
Hi Paul,
If it's had new tyres all-round at 10,000 then this car obviously had problems. I think you can safely assume that the rear wheels will have been re-set to correctthe tyre wear, but I have my doubts about the front. Before you commit to buy (if you are still considering it) I would have a long chat with the service manager about the front wheel alignment. If he assures you that it is now fixed, I'd be interested in talking to him myself!

At the very least, insist on a 4-wheel alignment check before delivery, and ask for a copy of the results. If it turns out in the months to come that the front-wheel alignment spec is incorrect, as several of us suspect, you would have some grounds for getting Mazda to foot the bill for any replacement tyres.

Best of luck,

Dave.

Gadgetvicar mentions the "2 degree adjustment", and Minty right back at post #12 mentioned 2 degrees toe-in all round. However, the printout I was given by Magna Mazda Christchurch, dated 1 May 07, shows a nominal value of total toe, for front and rear, as +2.20 mm. And the tolerance is shown as -2.20 to +6.60 mm!! Micheldever tyres guy said this tolerance was ridiculous; he then converted the nominal figure from a chart to 0.38 degrees, and worked on atoleranceof between 0.28 and 0.48 degrees (hundredths, not minutes).

Is the quoted 2 degree figure actually 2 mm, or did Mazda Christchurch have the wrong data? And is it total toe, ie about half on each side? There seems to be apossibility of misunderstanding from hearsay.

Just an update on the continuing sorry saga.

My Sport petrol was re-tyred yesterday at the local dealership where they fitted the same Dunlop 2050s at £102 a corner with Mazda paying for 50% of the rears (ie one of the four tyres) and also the alignment check. I'm still fighting with Mazda as I feel they should pay for everything given that I have the vehicle on a two year lease and wouldn't expect to have to replace any tyres in that time.

Have no confidence that this alignment is a fix for the problem but at least the new tyres will keep the family safe for the foreseeable future...

Have they mentioned anything about payments to you?
Nothing was said to me, and I do not intend even taking my wallet to pick the car up.

Many many moons ago when I first noticed the problem on my car. long before I found this site. I took my car to a local tyre place who put the car on the jig to test the geometry and I was told that the rear thrust was 2mm out. I still have the bit of card the guy wrote it on.
Why won't Mazda simply admit defeat and do something.

I have written to the elusive John Smith at MMUK and requested answers to several questions that I think he will avoid like the plague.
However I did ask one simple question that should be easy to answer, that was; Are the cars leaving the production line with the same geometry settings today, as they did in2005/6?
I wonder what the answer will be!!!

Hi all.I left my Mazda dealer in Cheltenham yesterday in disgust. I think Mazda are completely unprofessional and treat their customers with contempt.I wont go into details because it is too long and you all have heard it before. Anyway i left the showroom and drove straight to Ford dealers in Gloucester and part exchanged for a new Ford Ranger Thunder. I was only offered £13000(do they know something)and the car isnt a year old yet,but i got a good price on the Ranger.Better to get out now before things really go **** up!!
Good luck to you all, your going to need it. Rob.

I managed to get Mazda to pay for 41% of my FRONT replacement tyres, after the dealer took all the measurements and adjusted accordingly. My car has done 12000 miles. My rear tyres were not worn too much so didnt need replacing.I believeMazda paid my dealer whoin turn repaid me. This took 8 weeks.

This is wholly unacceptable.
Mazda should be fixing the cause of the problem and replacing the worn tyres free of charge. If they keep expecting us to pay for them and we do they will never sort the problem out.
If the tyre has been worn because of misalignment the integrity of the whole tyre is compromised therefore needs replacing.
This is Mazda's responsbility 100%.
