Tyre wear on UK Mazda5
Hi,
I am currently thinking about buying an ex-demonstration Furano from a local dealer andcame across this thread.
Can anyone confirm that the tyre wear problem has been acknowledged and resolved by Mazda as suggested in the quote below. I noticed the car in question had four new tyres and when I bought up the subject of tyre wear I was told that the car had in fact been in the workshop yesterday to have settings changed to sovle the problem.
Thanks

At this point I was informed that there was a known and significant problem on Mazda5 vehicles as a result of wrongly aligned steering geometry. All dealerships should know of the issue, had been issued with amended geometry and should advise customers of an 80% contribution to the cost of replacement tyres.

I doubt whether anyone can say for sure, since they probably won't have done enough mileage since having new tyres and realignment to be able to judge.
One general point - independent tyre outlets are unlikely to have the revised data. Yesterday I went to Micheldever Tyres (much better equipped and professional than the average fast-fit place), having clipped a kerb in dark and rain, and their handbook didn't have Mazda 5 in it at all. Fortunately I had the printout from dealer alignment check 2 weeks previously, so the technician loaded those nominal figures into the computer. (Had to convert from millimetres and degrees/minutes to 100ths of a degree - nothing is straightforward). He said that Mazda are generally not very good at providing info.

I've just built my "tyre wear graph" in Excel totrack if my 1.8 TS2 does have this problem.
Can I clarify - is the problem unven wear "centre to edge" (which I would presume to be tyre pressure related) of the tread or "inner edge to outer edge" (which I woudl presume to be geometry related).

I have written to MMUK asking them for a definitive description of their view of the problem.
I think it is about time they came off the fence and made it clear exactly what the problem is. (as if we didn't know already). It seems that different dealers have a different view of the problem, and therefore are treating us differently, which is wrong.
Once we have that sorted out, they can then come up with a definitive answer to the problem. (Someone somewhere in the Ford/Mazda Empire is going to get lumbered with that!!!).
Then when that has been sorted. They can reset all of our cars....
I have suggested, that once they have the fix they should, as a gesture of good will and duty, then fit a new set of tyres, regardless of wear. The tyres being the ones that Mazda are recommending to fit on the car.
Once they have done this the whole matter can have a line drawn under it and we can get on with our lives. Much as I will miss talking to you all........ I do have other things to do, as I am sure all of you do....
Heres hoping.......

Here is my latest update on the damage sustained whilst the car was in the care of the local dealer.
The dealership have admitted damage was caused to the car and have offered to rectify on June 4th.
I am to receive a free car for two days whilst repairs are being carried out.
I am happy with this, as the whole affair with the tyre problem has left me totally drained.
This afternoon I receive another call regarding the tyres - I had submitted two invoices totalling £490 for all four tyres, although I was told Mazda only required the invoice for the rears.
I have to inform you all that I have been offered 2/3 of the total bill as a refund - therefor £327 will be winging its way back to me. So £163 for 4 new tyres is not good, but it is better that just 50% for the rears and nothing for the fronts, as some members have been offered.
As I had covered 10k they are therefore assuming the average mileage covered would be 30k so bearing this in mind, I have accepted their offer.
Regardless of the problem, the car has now had the settings for geometry reset, and I will keep an eye on any wear that may take place in the time period before the carwill be offloaded after June 4th.
Some of you may say I have given in easily, others will say take it - all that I can say is - it has been an experience I never want to go through again, and I will never purchase another Mazda vehicle - ever.
Good luck to everyone else, you may get more, but as far as I am concerned its money in the bank.

Just had a phone call from my dealer. going in for 4 new tyres and geometry resetting on June 12th...
I hope that will then put an end to it all.
I have had a reply from Jon Smith, he is going to get back to me tomorrow, once he has had chance to look into my cars case.
I have lobbied for him to publicly announce what is going on to stop all this inequality of service from different dealers.

I've just returned from Phoenix Mazda, Linwood, having had 4 Pirelli P6000's fitted (having been told last week that they would fit Bridgestones). Total cost £333.52. So, there appears to be little consistency as to which tyres are being fitted, or how recompense is being offered- this price included the 70% contribution for the rears, but nothing for the fronts. I've been told that the 2 degree adjustment has been made to the rears and that 'these are good tyres'. No further explanation, and no suggestion of further monitoring. The dealer has been tight-lipped throughout. This has taken seven weeks to get to this point. My suspicion is that they want this problem to go away.
Having had the tyres fitted, I will now write to MMUK and Phoenix Mazda MD's, with complaints as to how this been dealt with. Slow service, lack of full explanation and remedy, and an apparent total disregard for the customer are at the top of the list. I also want to know if MMUK will contribute towards the costs of tyre replacement on an annual basis, if this is not solved?

No, I'm afraid I can't confirm that at all.I was speaking to theService Manager at Lythgoe Mazda in Bolton last Friday and he tells me that at the moment Mazda UK are still only accepting that there was a fault with REAR wheels, which can be corrected. They still will not admit to a problem causing front tyre wear on the inside edges.
What milage is on the Furano you are considering?
Anyone else out there had any positive news about front wheels?
Dave.

The mileage is 10,000. It has had new tyres all round. I noticed that both fronts were slightly scuffed on the inside already and mentioned this. I was told by the guy who has hadthe car(the Ford service manager) that the tyres were changed before the geometry had modified, hence the scuffing. I asked the sales woman if I bought the car could I have it in writing that the tyre problem was sorted, but she wouldn't commit.
