Default spare key for Mazda5

After a really desperate situation today, I decided that I really need a spare carkey to leave in the house and called Mazda to inquire-- they want to charge me $60 for the key and $200 (!)for the transponder (I think that's what he called it) and I have to bring it in for programming. While I appreciate the security features, this seems like a major rip-off. Anyway-- Ijust googled the topic and found some directions someone posted on another website forum on how to program a Mazda3 spare yourself. You have to buy a transponder key from the dealerand, as long as you have two other transponder keys,it soundsfairly easy. http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=5340.0

Think this might work on a 5?Anyoneever tried programming a key on their own and/or have a sense if these directions would work? Other advice?

Thanks!!

Default RE: spare key for Mazda5

After hearing the replacement prices, I just went down to Wal-Mart and had 3 spare keys cut for $1.50 each and put in a Viper alarm bought for $85 off of the internet. I kinda rigged the transponder portion of the factory key fob to the ignition for the time being so car still starts on cue. My 5 didn't have a security alarm on it in the 1st place so I don' tmind bypassing the factory transponder system.

I think I'm the only person in the world that cannot get this procedure to work to program a new key. I went and got one cut at Mazda (no questions asked... I even had a friendly discussion on how easy it is to program a 3rd or more key(s) myself) but yet every time I try the procedure it never works. Everyone else seems to get it their first try that I've noticed.

Baaahhh lol

(sorry didnt realize how old this thread was)
