Default Mazda 5 Stereo Dash Kit

A few years ago I bought a new stereo and dash kit from Crutchfield, installed it all, and life went on. The dash kit however did/does not fit perfectly, and is of course not nearly as attractive as the original stereo surround.

I have for a few years now debated customizing the original stereo by cutting out the double din space and tweaking it to take a normal size single din with cubby thing.

Question is, has anyone else out there attempted to do this? I am unsure and have little confidance that I can pull this job off myself. I checked with a custom installer in town and they quoted me about $100 to do the job. They are also not 100% certain they can pull it off, but do have high confidence that they can.

Also, can anyone out there recommend a dash kit that actually looks good and matches the rest of the interior? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Here's a website that sells these things: Metra Online | Welcome to Metra Auto Parts Online Warehouse

Quality wise is not the best as buttons don't work as good. You could also put some 3M decals on to spruce it up.

Ya, that is the exact one that I have. The Metra 99-7509 Dash Kit.

I wonder if the one from Scosche is any better: Mazda 5 Dash Kit 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 | Dash Kits | MA1538B | by Scosche
