Hi I have a 2012 Mazda 5 w about 20k miles, and my oil filter came off while driving. I did the oil change myself (I know you all will say dumb mistake I know, but that's a first) The oil light came on, and I drove for maybe a minute before I stopped. Oil coated the rear of the car and underneath. After I put on a new filter and filled it back up and started it, it runs but makes a bad clacking sound while idling. It holds oil, and I don't see metal or water in the oil. Do I have any options beside a new motor? I don't think dealer would warranty it, any advice on what to check first? Thanks!

 

I would check compression and oil pressure first. Also using a piece of garden hose , one end to the ear the other to various places on the engine will tell you more exactly where the clacking noise is coming from; lower end, pistons, upper end?

 

I think it sounds like it is coming from the top end. It runs and drives but compression feels weak, I haven't had it tested

 

You need proof of oil changes on dealer schedule intervals. Without it , good luck.
I hope this last time was the only time you changed the oil.
Don't tell them you changed the oil!
While a car is under warranty, get someone else to change the oil and keep the F'n receipt!

I didn't think of that. Indeed you have a chance to use the warranty to have the engine replaced. It may not be absolutely ethical since you know the mistake was yours, but big companies don't play ethical all the time either.

If the clatter is coming from one spot on the top end it could be a damaged lifter. In that case it may be possible to replace the lifter or the complete head instead of the whole engine. However, I would expect a shortened engine life, even if the head repair fixes the noise. Verify where the noise comes from. Don't keep using the vehicle!
