Default Max Safe RPM

I just posted about mileage and RPM, and got thinking, what is the highest RPM to regularly reach before you start to shorten the life of the engine?

Generally I shift around 3000 RPM, and cruise between 2000 and 2500. Under heavy acceleration I bring it up to 4000 or so, and in RARE cases, around 5000. Never anywhere near the Redline.

But this brings up a question, is approaching the redline Super bad? Does it take a huge tole on the engine? Certainly it wears things down more quickly, but is it harmful at all? I don't dare go that high for fear of causing damage I can't afford to repair!

One would think that the CPU would be set to cap off the RPM and fuel flow to prevent any real engine damage, but not so sure they actually do that.

What's the Redline?
Good quality clean oil is the best protection for hi revving.

Sweet. I am gonna pin the tach and see what happens. What could go wrong? Can I send you the bill in case bad things happen?

;-)
