Default Cycle carrier on hatch

Hi, I've just purchased a Carbon Grey 1.8 ts2 (2.5 years old) and am new to Mazda after years of Zafira ownership for our family car, so new to this forum too.

I have a qustion about a cycle carrier for the hatch (the type with 6 straps that hook around the hatch). I've used one of these for a few years before but it appears the Mazda rear hatch is plastic? Is this true? would it be safe to hang a cycle rack off? I've heard of certain models with plastic hatches that you should not do this on - Citreon for e.g. I've done a google search but not found anything.

PS. I'm loving the Mazda - feels so much more solid and of general better build quality than the Zafira.

Thanks for any help,

.Richard

Hi Richard
Found your post whilst browsing the net, new to this site

I purchased a 2 yr old carbon grey 1.8 TS2 yesterday From what I've read on the net, the rear door is plastic like you say.

With regards to cycle carriers, on our old car we had a strap on one like you describe but I never felt happy driving with it.
Instead we had a towbar fitted and went for a towbar mounted carrier (Thule) which was so much more sturdier.
We don't have a tow bar on the Mazda though, and no plans to fit one as yet but probably will at some point to accomodate our carrier
Ours holds 3 bikes and was very affordable.
We are a family of 5 though and will be putting two of the childrens bikes on the roof, as well as a slim roof box (poor mazda!)

Snap

We have a roof box but it is a short wide one and I've also come to the conclusion I'm going to do the same as you - get a slim box (Thule Ocean / Pacific 500 looks about right) and put the two kids bike on the roof.

Enjoy your car.

Hi happymonday76 - how are you getting on with your car? We love ours. I've got one issue with a squaling noise from the belt area which only ocurs when the car has been washed or stood in the rain. It goes away after driving for a few hundred yards. Have you experienced this? I've put a thread on here about it.
We got a Thule 500 slim roof box in the end and I've mounted a cycle rack either side of it on Mazda roof bars.
