So, my wife threw a rod in her 2005 5. She knows now, that if you hear clanking, don't drive it for 5 minutes till it stops running, but that's neither here nor there. But, there's a hole in the block, needs to be replaced.

So, mechanic gave us a quote of $6200. Now, I haven't seen the quote, wife is down at her parents house not near to me, but that's what they said on the phone. Originally they were going to look for a JDM replacement, but none were found for the 5.

So, couple of questions.

One, isn't this the same 2.3 from the 3? The 3 and possibly others, at least the same block and head.

Two, if it isn't the same as the 2.3 from the 3, does this sound a bit on the expensive side?
