Weird sound
I've been hearing a high pitched whine coming from my engine which I tracked down to the cylindrical unit attached to the power steering reservoir. Sometimes its louder than other times. I also hear my power steering machine noises when I turn my wheels. This is very odd since my previous car didn't do this. Just wanted to know if it was anything to worry about.

RE: Weird sound
Alright!! I've found the answer to the unusual power steering pump noise!!
It can be found in this detailed description of the Mazda3 from VolvoCorp. http://www.swedespeed.com/news/publi...inter_103.html
"Rather than use a conventional engine-driven power-steering pump, MAZDA 3 ’s engineering team chose an electro-hydraulic power-assisted steering system (EHPAS). Using an electric motor to drive the pump minimizes drag on the engine, thereby increasing power and fuel economy, as well as minimizing NVH because there is one less item attached to the engine. The steering arms were kept short, and the steering gear mounted low on the subframe to minimize unwanted toe change in bounce and rebound situations. Of course, this means the car goes where you point it, under all road situations."
Supposedly the E46 range of BMW's have a similar set-up. So I'll take it as a good thing. Just wish it was quieter, it's especially noisy in cold weather.
