is it possible to turbos charge or even supercharge an 04 3?
SURE!! 'Got 4 grand?

j/k.

Check out the link for protege garage I listed in my above post.
And just to add/offer my .02, as sstlaure stated superchargers to take quite a bit of the engines power to run, but you have boost from idle onward.
Unlike stated before, turbos do rob some power from the engine. This is why many turboed cars have a much less restrictive exhaust to begin with. Having the driven fan in the stream increases backpressure in the exhaust. And turbos are not very effective until their spool speed is reached. They also tend to run out of head room before most engines reach their redline. Ask anyone w/an MSP. Their effective boost range is more limited than a super, but do rob less power to begin with.
In short, a big powerful engine (i.e. V8) in n/a state will handle a super better than a smaller less powerful one would. For those (like ours) go w/a turbo for thestreet.

i've been running HiBoost for almost 2 years now, and lag isn't an issue. it is there, but it makes it so the stock setup can take the upped power. out of the box on stock internals you are in teh 230-250+ range, running around 8psi. free up some exhaust and there are guys in the 270hp range, still not surpassing 8psi.

if you want to build the block, HiBoost can send you everything you need with the kit if you want. rods, pistons, rings, bigger injectors.....he'll sell you a setup good for over 500hp if you want.

besides the fact that they don't exist yet, the only benefit of the SC on the mazda rather than a turbo is, you are less likely to want to up the boost to show off and blow something. you will be stuck at whatever boost you have unless you want to change pulleys.

+1 on what Mr. Tea writes. HiBoost has some really nice complete kits, even for the autos (at around 5psi boost) and I think they're still in the 200-220 HP range. Not bad for a 2800 lbs car. Not a drag car killer but with skill a major player in the back road runner arena.

Hiboost does make an excellent kit no doubt about it but the problem is the $4K's its going to cost someone to get it, especially with someone on a college budget, I.E. Me! Best bet and if you know the knowledge, DIY!....I've talked to Hiboost, They'll send the maninfold and the stand alone F/M for $600...You can really find a stand alone pretty much anywere. Tons of people make them because they aren't vehicle specific. its 440 for the manifold alone. They pretty much have a Monopoly on that manifold becasuse I';ve looked and looked and no one makes a turbo manifold for an 04 3 besides the one that comes in the kit. Then your next major purchase would be Fuel injectors. The rest of it I.E. Pulmbing and the turbo and the intercooler...Junk it...Find a eclipse with a side mount intercool grab it. and search for a T3/T4 turbo...I think thats what Hiboost's manifold flange is? and then either buy aluminum piping and go to an exhaust shop and have them bend it...~$150. or Cheaper yet. Home Deopt or Lowes, get some PVC piping, Hell thats what it looks like comming in the hiboost kit....Standard house plumbing can handle 220psi of water pressure which is a **** load more than the 8psi of AIR that you wanting to run...Then paint it black. and presto..turbo, running 8psi...make sure you find a boost controller to set it at that lol. The only problem you are going to have if you use the PCV piping route is on the other side of your turbo (the Intake side) you have to find a way to make the MAF sensor work... Kinda funny though if you look a hi boost pics of intake for it...it looks really damn similar to a short ram intake off a 94-97 Honda Accord just flipped around...Im thinking it might work but then you run into the problem of the MAF because Hondas use MAP's instead of MAF's But then again I'm thinking you could go up to Auto Zone and buy the MAF sensor adaptor and cut the piping in half and put it there....Who knows...

440 for the manifold + 220 for Injectors + 250 for the stand alone + 200 for the turbo (cheaper off ebay but be careful) + 75 for the sidemount (thats what my friend got his for) + 75 for PCV piping = $1260 +/- still $3K less than Hiboost minus shipping lol.

What sstlaure said, they're two ways of doing the same thing, that being forcing more air into the combustion chambers. I'd also add that you don't have lag with a super charger.
these cars are front wheel drive. lag is a good thing. if you wanted to build a lot of horsepower at the bottom end, you would be more likely to never have the front tires stop spinning. my old protege wasn't turbo and it was just mildly modified to the tune of about 200 hp and i could melt the tires through the whole first gear, spin them halfway through second and even sometimes get a third gear chirp. it was fun to show off, but i race a lot more than i show off and it got old.

I'm not desputing your figure, mzdaspd304, but was wondering where you got it from? I checked my own '04 owners manual and all I could find were GAWR's. I rememebr seeing curb weights listed somewhere, but I can't remember where....?
I too thought they were in the 2800lb (+/-) range.
Plus, I assume your curb weight figure is for a sedan and not the hatch, whichwhile 2" shorter, but also a bit heavier?

oh please, someone by all means make a custom kit that works. hell, i'll give you my extra Profec specII boost controller if anyone can get a custom setup working like the HiBoost one.

those thinking about it might want to look around to see how much luck people have had on the mazdas with those $250 generic "stand alone" units (which are piggybacks for the record, unless you make a megasquirt setup yourself).

all i'm saying is please don't tell people you can make a turbo that works on the car for $1500 unless you've done it. there are people that have spent over 3k to make custom kits "at their friends shops", that are selling them to go HiBoost. i will answer ANY question needed about the kit, because i've seen it and used it. but DO NOT try to build your own unless you have plenty of free downtime for the car and like buying one part as a time (and sometimes 2-3 times) as you realize what you are missing.

agreed 4k is a lot, you can't contest that. but you can save, you can borrow, you can just stick to bolton's. or hold out until early next year and i think Ricardo @ F2 will have financing setup if that's an option for you.
