If you remove just the muffler, and leave the cat and the resonator in place, it is not to loud or ricey sounding.

My local shop did it for $30.

You don't want to "straight pipe" all the way. Take my word for it. You'll ****-off your neighbors and the droning will drive you nuts when cruising. Plus removing the cat causes all kinds of problems with the car and Mr. Law.
At the very least, leave the stock cat and resonator on, remove the muffler or install a quality free flowing muffler from say Magnaflow, Vibrant, or whomever, just stay away from the cheap, giant fart cans sold on eBay.

oh yeah that droning that v1 mentioned will get alot of ppl who ride with annoyed. it may sound ok on the outside but the inside is a different story. Ill give an example, my buddy from my auto school had a older vr6 jetta. it had a mangaflow exhaust w/o the res and outside it sounded amazing, a nice deep growl no raspyness at any load or rpm.....then i took a ride on the inside and well we went 5min down the road and i wanted to get out and walk. Long story short, w/e you do keep the res at the very least.

Side note: I hate vw's

Also, tis not necessary to pipe all the way back, just have them piece a pipe the length of the muffler and weld er up.
