Default Original display with aftermarket stereo

I need some help. I installed an Alpine stereo in my 1998 Mazdaspeed 3. When I disconnected the original stereo I unplugged the antenna, 24-pin plug and the plug for the display (mpg, time, etc). Here's where I get lost. The new stereo has a place for the antenna and the 24-pin plug but what about the display plug. Right now the display is in the car but only shows the outside temp and the climate control temp. I asked this same question on mazda3forums.com but was confused by the answers. I got the feeling that I can still have the display functional but where does it plug in to? I don't think (and I could be wrong) that the plug goes into the back of the display. I'm almost certain that it plugged into the original stereo itself. The Alpine stereo doesn't have a place for the display plug. HELP!!!

Thanks,
Matt
