no key hole on the passenger door
Welcome to the insanity, Remindlessness.
That sucks about your paint though. What happened and whatdid the (nice) officer say about the damage? Depending on the circumstances (you weren't running drugs or illegal alcohol, were you?), I'd be puttin' in a claim if I wuz U. Take plenty of pictures ASAP.
Don't know why I'm jumping in on this one. But, if you look up the handleson one of the dealer ads on this page. (They have a parts look up catalogue) You will see that the parts cataloge lists a handle (sedan) (hatchback) for the left side and lists one for the right side. Knowing parts and how the #'s work. I would have to agree with UBM. If there are indeed two different part #'s. They are not interchangable. No matter what it looks like on the outside.

So they would take an extra step to add something extra to a more basic model ... because ... ? They want the base model owner to have something the people who spent more money do not have? Nonsensical.

what i think is that because in the I touring and above they have the keyless entry they did not need to put a second passenger door key hole... but on the base model that has nothing but A/C, they are required to have it because you need a way to open it and i believe that is how it works. not tooo sure but thats what i am pretty sure is waht happens

Hi folks....first post here...this "Topic" kinda cracked me up....I'm no expert here on this particular debate but noticed the following in regards to the 08 Mazda3i Sport specs....
http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/disp...ehicleCode=M3S
The 3i Sport model indicates for "interior options" that "Centralized door locking feature - driver's & front passenger's-side" is an "Not Available" for this model....
Anyhow....a BIG hello to everyone! Looking forward to driving my 07 M3 Sport Touring back home to Seattle from Tucson here next Monday...it was a fun drive down here with the exception of the Utah State Patrol and their K-9 scratching the paint on my car of 2,000 miles....

BTW I saw a 4 door M3 with the right side door lock yesterday, but my 1.0 mp phone camera didn't get a good shot of it

Now think about this: If you could pull the handle straight out of the driver's side door, towards you as you face the side of the door, and w/o turning it in any direction, slide it up over the roof and down the passenger side to the awaiting holes in that door, wouldn't it mount exactlythe same... with the keyhole facing the back of the car... just like when it was on the driver's side?
And, the way our door handles work, they pull the linkage inside the doorstraight out to release the latchin the first place. Why wouldn't they be interchangeable?

If you slide it over the roof as you suggest, when yourotate it... you turn it upside down. And the handle won't work properly if the top becomes the bottom. And you do have to rotate it, so the handle part faces outward.

As Chris suggested though, the internals may be slightly different left to right.I don't have proof either way, but I'm guessing that he was looking @ part numbers, one for the locking handle and the other w/o the lock hole. However, if you have a base "i" model w/both front doors locking, I'd bet the part numbers are exactly the same.
It simply makes sense that they wouldn't waste time and money on something that isn't necessary. So if the "i" model requires two locking doors, 1 L & 1 R, it would make perfect sense to simply use two of the same handle, flipped over.
