I assume you guys are talking about power lock cars. My '08 3i has key holes on both the passenger and driver's doors. I use the passenger keyhole ALL the time.

Picture please. And not some super close up where we can't tell which door it is.
Look, I'm just here to pass along information. If I was lying (and WHY would anyone lie about something so STUPID?), I'm a graphic artist by trade, and I'd just whip up a photoshopped version of a pic.

You want "proof"? Go find it yourself. All I've got is a camera phone, and it doesn't have the resolution to take a decent pic.

When I bought my 3i a few weeks ago, they had 6 more just like mine, all strippos with A/C as the only option, and they ALL had passenger-side keyholes. (Why did I notice? Who knows?) If it's such a big deal, then why not go to your nearest Mazda dealer and walk around the lot? Sounds like some people are just misinformed, or just too accustomed to seeing power-lock cars. I can't imagine how a manual-lock car wouldn't have a keyhole in the passenger-side door, or the trunk for that matter.

I've got better things to do with my time than borrow somebody's camera just to prove a no-brainer fact about my car. Don't believe me? WHO CARES? You can't believe half the crap you read on the internet anyway. Just call it "The Great Keyhole Conspiracy". Geez.

YES! thats exactly what it is. we dont believe you. and your a total dick for giving such a ******** response. 'Nuff said.

vm,
We were actually talking to EC who's got a (upscale) Speed3. Upon further reflection I can see where the base model might indeed have a RS keyhole/lock. But the power lock cars, that we all know of, including my own '04 s model, don't and that's why we've been questioning EC.
Take it easy, Man. Nothing personal. We're just having a little fun at EC's expense.

In order for some M3s to have a passenger door key hole, and others to not have a passenger door key hole, Mazda would have to have two different passenger doors made. In order to havea functioningkey, you need to have a different handle AND some different guts inside the door. To go to all this trouble, for just a certain model (the most basic, least expensivemodel?), and to change it effective 2008, five years into this particular generation of the Mazda 3, andwhen a major revamp of the Mazda 3 is on the near horizon (2009 or 2010 model year)... it would be shocking.

Mazda would take this step because .... ?

As a Mazda 3 owner, whenever I see one parked somewhere, I generally go and take a peek at it, no recollection of ever seeing a keyhole on the passenger door. The 08s have been out for several months now, so I know I have seen some 08s.

I am prepared to have much egg thrown in my face if a legit pic can be provided.

what i think is that because in the I touring and above they have the keyless entry they did not need to put a second passenger door key hole... but on the base model that has nothing but A/C, they are required to have it because you need a way to open it and i believe that is how it works. not tooo sure but thats what i am pretty sure is waht happens

I have to disagree w/you there, UBM. The door handles are interchangeable from left to right. Look at them sometime. They are symetrical. Simply flipa leftsideover and you have a right side handle.
Also, most power locks I am aware of are basically thesame as the manual version w/an electric solenoid controlling the action. Perhaps a different strut rod, but that's it.
I think it could be done quite easily and inexpensively., because it was designed to be that way.

Drunk V1, you might think that similar looking door handles would be interchangeable between passenger and driver side, but personal experience tells me they are NOT. If you flip them around 180 degrees, you lose something in the translation believe me. On the driver side, the key hole isto the right of the handle, but on the passenger side (if there was a keyhole) it would be to the left. They are not symmetrical, unless you turn them upside down, which would create other issues of great significance.

So they would take an extra step to add something extra to a more basic model ... because ... ? They want the base model owner to have something the people who spent more money do not have? Nonsensical.

Hi folks....first post here...this "Topic" kinda cracked me up....I'm no expert here on this particular debate but noticed the following in regards to the 08 Mazda3i Sport specs....

http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/disp...ehicleCode=M3S

The 3i Sport model indicates for "interior options" that "Centralized door locking feature - driver's & front passenger's-side" is an "Not Available" for this model....

Anyhow....a BIG hello to everyone! Looking forward to driving my 07 M3 Sport Touring back home to Seattle from Tucson here next Monday...it was a fun drive down here with the exception of the Utah State Patrol and their K-9 scratching the paint on my car of 2,000 miles....

Drunk V1?

Now that's beside the point and you keep my mother out of this.

Now think about this: If you could pull the handle straight out of the driver's side door, towards you as you face the side of the door, and w/o turning it in any direction, slide it up over the roof and down the passenger side to the awaiting holes in that door, wouldn't it mount exactlythe same... with the keyhole facing the back of the car... just like when it was on the driver's side?
And, the way our door handles work, they pull the linkage inside the doorstraight out to release the latchin the first place. Why wouldn't they be interchangeable?

I used to buy and repair VW Rabbits to drive and resell. They offered many parts that were designed like that, to incterchange from model to model and from side to side, including the outside door handles. From a business standpoint, it makes sense to keep costs down. Their handlesworked exactly the same whether they were on the left side or right side of the car, the front or the rear door.So Mazda would not have to produce a "special" part just to put a keyhole on the RS of the car.
