New Owner - Questions & Problems
Hey all,
Just became a Mazda owner a week ago. For years I have been driving a '96 geo prizm 5 speed that my mom leased brand new in 1996. It was finally time to get a new set of wheels and I almost settled on an 07 Corolla S...until I looked at how much better the standard features and interior of the first gen Mazda 3 are.
After looking through cars.com for a few days, I came across a 2004 3S 4-door in the beautiful winning blue mica with just under 112K miles on the clock, priced at $5k. I went to check it out at a local Toyota dealership and, well, I drove off the lot in it a few hours later.
Few days go by and I'm loving the car, it drives great, looks fantastic and I love everything about it. Then I get a CEL after leaving work on my third night of ownership.
Next day, I go to get the code pulled and the obd reader can't give me any feedback. Car still seems fine so I didn't sweat it. I got a two year standard warranty so it's an easy thing to take the car back to the dealer.
However...the whole time I've had the car I notice the tensioner pulley starting to squeak more and more and then on day 4 of ownership, the pulley disintegrates while I'm going down the highway, leaving me stranded in my 4 day old car. Ironically I was going to replace the pulley that morning but the local parts store didn't have one in stock.
So yeah, that's my story to this point, it has been a rough first week. My geo prizm with a knocking engine and 224k on the clock has yet to leave me stranded. I totally understand buying a new used car is always risky and this is a teething problem, I just can't wait to get the car back and hopefully have a prosperous future with it.
Anyway, I'm wondering how I sort out what the car has that's not standard? It has the 6 cd changer/sunroof package which is awesome. What I'm most curious about is the spoiler. Is that part of a package or an extra? Every 1st gen mazda3 I've seen has no spoiler on the trunk. Is there a list of extras and options somewhere I could look at?
Cheers,
James

Sad to hear about it stranding you. I've had mine since 2006 and its mechanics have held up great, still feels and drives like when I first got it. Here is a pretty comprehensive list of features.
