Those ECU products assume that the buyer will have some knowledge of EFI/ECU Performance calibrating. The Q&A are more geared to the use of thier product but only to make the initial ECU connection and enter the mapping area's.
Most do not understand that it is very complicated process to do correct and engine safe calibrating.
The basic program offered by many vendors is used by many and unfortunately does have it down side. The biggest one is when users do ot adjust all the PIDS need when adjusting things like an example timing tables. You can not just adjust timing whith out other area's like fueling and possible even injector duty cycles and more area's as well as an example of only a couple area that all need to be adjusted when one is changed.

These programs IMHO are not suitable for the average DIY and really are better suited for experienced ECU programmers.

My recommendation would have been to have stayed with a company that at least offered canned tunes and there you could have learned by building new mapping off of those.

You may want to look into Versa Tunner and see if they have something to offer for your Mazda?

I have purchased a tune from DRTuned a couple months ago now, and the tuning process is going well and I have no complaints. Sure the instructions provided could be a little bit better, but they aren't hard to figure out if you read them thoroughly. Mazdaedit also provides prompts that the provided instructions tell you to follow. DRTuned has been very professional with me and offered me quick and effective solutions to any problems I had along the way. I would recommend taking a deep breath, going through the instructions again slowly, and if you still have issues then ask for help in a professional manner.

Interesting way posting as a new member?
Why don't you start a thread about your Mazda and you project with it? We need more that are doing good upgrades and just projects in general.

I would be very cautious if you go outside their CANNED TUNES without doing some research and lots of reading to learn on how to understand and interpret data logging information to make the safe proper calibrations changes.
And no matter what you say companies that offer these ECU access tools for calibrations adjustments limit there help and advise when you are making your own calibration changes. It requires data logging and sending in having the company study analyze and do mapping changes to TEST!

Below is a several second data run from one of my customers that had a concern. If you can see it then you would be what I would call experienced tooner! It took me about 45 minutes to take that information and color graph it with a repeatable sequence to see what was going on.

With DRTuned I myself am not making any changes to any ECU maps. To start I simply take an ECU dump with mazdaedit and email it to him, he then responds with a basemap and I drive around for a certain amount of miles. Then, I take a log of the values he needs and email it back to him. He looks over those logs and makes the changes himself before emailing me back a new map to flash. Then the process repeats until I have a tune thats dialed in. I (or any other DRTuned customer) am not making any changes to any maps, DRTuned is. As a customer all I have to do is log and flash.

Yes and the premium package as most offer are limited to X amount of free tuning adjustment (6) and after you generally start paying per tune! Thats is where they really make the money.
I would also make sure that your purchase did not allow them to "LOCK" your ECU? Ask them! If they did you will have no real way to compare what your are getting with changes.

I would recommend that you add all your can for the add on parts to the engines before your 6 free/included tune offer runs out. If you price the tune after that you will understand how expensive it starts to get.
The other thing is ask for the mapping changes that they did just to see how many PIDS were adjusted and what they did. Seat of the pants or BUTT DYNO's are a retailers best friend because if you think there was an adjustment that improved engine performance your mind is already set in that direction. many adjustments are made to safeguard the engine and are not apparently felt by the "butt Dyno" instead comparing your DYNO testing hopefully you did before you started any engine upgrades specifically with a ECU tunning package?

Just to be clear I never once said or implied that DRTuned was a bad vendor.

However I do think the name is entertaining .... DR.????? considering the owner himself states "SELF EDJUCATED" working on friends and customers MAZDA's.

I still think you should start your own thread because we are hijacking this one at this point!

I know this is an old thread but can you tell me what this means that the ECU is locked. I am coming from an MX5 and I had someone tune my car with Mazda Edit and to be honest no matter which tune file I upload they all feel the same and when I flash back to stock it feels no different. Please and thank you.

Some ECU calibrators that are very insecure will "lock" your ECU preventing another calibrator from making any changes or seeing what they actually did. The problem when someone "locks" your ECU is that if that person ever dies or stops offering the service the only thing you can do is get a dealer flash or most currently available OEM ECU pass-through that will return your ECU back to all original programming and service access.

This is why as a Certified EFI/ECU Performance calibrator I always advise never have you ECU locked and always ask whomever or what company is offering calibration adjust if they lock your ECU and not to use them!.

So is this something I would know when I go to flash a new tune or would it let me flash but then not do anything? I have no idea if my ECU is locked. I just find it weird that when i flash either the stock tune or other tunes i have about 6 to 8 tunes, the car feels no different.
