Pistons will generally be fine. Just send out the head and get it revalved with new guides. With the head off turn the crank and watch the pistons and make sure they move freely and don't leave marks on the cylinder walls.
Hey, i do thank you so much for the info. i did rotate the crank and piston do move freely. i do need help on setting up the the timimg. waiting on the sst to arrive. do you have any pic's or can you guide me on how to time it.

Racer662009 thank you, can i reuse the timing chain or just buy a timing chain kit?

Well if the old vvt gear messed up u probably want to replace the chain because it may have stretched when it locked up. I have always used the genuine mazda parts but I worked for a mazda dealer for over 10 years. Also make sure u replace the diamond washers behind the exhaust cam gear and the vvt gear. I can walk u through timing it but I don't have any pics. U will need 2 sst's to do it. The pin that goes in the side of the block for the crank and the plate that goes on the back of the cams
