Default hatchback problem

Hello all,

I have a 2012 Mazda3 SKYACTIV hatchback. Absolutely love the car, and it's been bulletproof, no problems until now, and I am at a loss. If the car is running or turned off, either way, I can't open the hatchback. I've tried locking and unlocking with the key fob and with the electric locks on the driver door. Neither one unlocks the hatchback every time. It's very random, when i push the outside button on the hatch, it won't open, and 5 minutes later i do the same thing and the hatch opens. 5 minutes later it won't work. Now today after work i hit the unlock button on the fob, climbed in the driver seat, shut the door, and the hatch popped open. I never touched the outside button. I'm confused and the dealership service guys are too. Any help is greatly appreciated. Oh, and the key fob is the plain jane one that has lock, unlock and red emergency button and I just replaced the battery in both fobs.

It's not uncommon for the rubber section of the boot release button on the tailgate to split & allow water in ingress, corroding the switch.
