Exploding Clutch Spring - 2004 Mazda 3 Sport GT
When depressing the clutch yesterday, it sounded (and felt) like a bomb exploded at my feet. Until stopping to investigate, the only noticeable difference in how my car felt was a lighter clutch. When I searched the floor mat for evidence of the "bomb", I found a broken spring which I believe used to be attached to the back side of the clutch pedal. Internet posts from a few years ago indicate this spring is not available as a replacement part from Mazda, and that Mazda's fix involves replacing the entire pedal at a cost of several hundred dollars.
Due to abysmal work performed in the Mazda dealer's service department when my car was new, I've been using an excellent independent garage for more than four years. I believe others have had the same problem with a broken clutch spring, and wonder if anyone has found a repair alternative that doesn't involve replacing the entire clutch pedal. Any ideas where my garage might find a suitable spring? If a spring is available, can it easily be reattached without dismantling half the car?
