Default Eliminate cats on an "04 Mazda 3

Do any of you know someone who eliminated their cat/conv"s but left in the stock muffler?

What kind of results did they end up with?

I am interested in retaining the low volume of the stock muffler, but want to increase the power and mpg. (sleeper)

I know it"s a tall order, but I prefer not to have the hypnotic droning and excessive volume that many of my friends had, when they changed to a 'performance' exhaust system/muffler.

Any and all comments will be appreciated.

Wes.

What about the air that we all have to share for breathing?

What about changing to a High-Flow cat. I know we might have to start Smogging our cars here and if I did the whole exhaust on mine that is what is going on mine.

The power gain isn"t worth the hassle IMO. Quiet and powerful don"t mix (unless you"re talking turbo)

Agreed. A high-flow cat is probably your best option, but w/o the rest of the system probably not worth the trouble either. You will not see any great difference in power or MPG with what you are proposing, but you don"t have to run open pipes either.
A well designed aftermarket system will likely a be little louder, sure, some more than others, but should not drone either.
Here is the best of both worlds, imo.
